The gross-to-net gap on a raise depends primarily on your marginal tax bracket. Every additional dollar of salary is taxed at your marginal rate — not your effective (average) rate. A $5,000 raise for someone in the 22% federal bracket with FICA produces roughly $3,575 in additional after-tax annual income, or about $137/biweekly paycheck. If you also pay state income tax, the take-home is lower still.
When negotiating a raise, come prepared with both the percentage and the dollar amount, and know your after-tax impact so you can make a realistic lifestyle assessment.
