How Stock P&L Is Calculated

This stock profit and loss calculator computes four key metrics for any trade: total cost basis, total sale proceeds, gross P&L (ignoring commissions), and net P&L (after both buy and sell commissions). The ROI is expressed as net profit divided by total cost basis.

Total Cost = (Buy Price × Shares) + Buy Commission. Total Revenue = (Sell Price × Shares) − Sell Commission. Net P&L = Total Revenue − Total Cost. Break-Even Price = (Total Cost + Sell Commission) / Shares — this is the minimum sell price to cover all costs including the anticipated sell-side commission.

Commission impact is often underestimated on smaller trades. A $10 buy commission and $10 sell commission on a 10-share trade adds $2/share to your effective cost — meaning a stock must rise $2/share just to break even. On 1,000-share trades, the per-share impact is negligible. This is why most serious traders at major brokerages have moved to zero-commission platforms.

Remember that this calculator shows pre-tax profit. Capital gains taxes apply to realized profits. For US investors, holding a position more than one year before selling typically reduces your tax rate from ordinary income rates (up to 37%) to long-term capital gains rates (0%, 15%, or 20%). Use our Capital Gains Tax Calculator to estimate your tax liability on a profitable trade.
