How to Use the Bill Split Calculator

1. Enter the Total Bill (before tip). Use the subtotal from the receipt — the amount before any tip is added, but after tax if your receipt lists tax separately from the item total. Entering the post-tip total here will cause the calculator to add a tip on top of a tip, inflating everyone's share.

2. Enter the Number of People. Count everyone who's actually splitting the cost, including yourself. If someone at the table only had a drink and wants to pay their own way separately, leave them out of this count and handle their share manually — the equal split assumes everyone included is paying the same amount.

3. Choose a Tip Percentage. Tap one of the preset buttons — 15%, 18%, or 20% — or enter a custom percentage if your group has a different standard. If the service was poor or the bill already includes a service charge, select No Tip and add a smaller custom amount instead so you're not tipping twice.

4. Toggle Custom Split if amounts are unequal. Turn this on when people ordered very differently — someone had the $45 steak and a bottle of wine, someone else had a salad and water. This mode lets you type in each person's exact pre-tip amount, with a running balance showing how much of the total bill is still unassigned as you go.

5. Read Your Results. For an equal split, you'll see the Tip Amount, the Total with Tip, and the Equal Per Person figure everyone owes. For a custom split, each person's individual total appears instead, already including their share of the tip. Either way, double-check that the per-person amounts actually add back up to the total before everyone pulls out their phone to pay.

Case Study

Derek organized a coworker dinner for seven people and ended up in charge of splitting the bill. The subtotal came to $130.00, and the group agreed on an 18% tip, which the calculator worked out to $23.40 — a total of $153.40 to divide seven ways. The Equal Per Person figure came back as $21.91. Tip Amount

Because most bills don't divide into a whole number of cents, this figure is often rounded — which is exactly why a group of, say, seven people paying the displayed amount each may come up a few cents short of or over the actual total.

Custom Split (unequal amounts)

A mode that lets you assign a specific pre-tip amount to each person instead of dividing everything equally, with a running balance that shows how much of the bill remains unassigned. This is the fairer option whenever orders varied significantly — it keeps the person who had an appetizer, entrée, and dessert from paying the same as the person who just had a coffee.

Proportional vs. Equal Tip Splitting

Equal tip splitting gives every person the same tip amount regardless of what they ordered, which is simpler and far more common in practice. Proportional tip splitting instead scales each person's tip to match their share of the food total, so the person with the $60 entrée tips more than the person with the $12 salad — more technically fair, but rarely worth the extra math for a casual group dinner.

Why Splitting the Bill Never Quite Comes Out Even

Run almost any real restaurant total through an equal split with an odd number of people, and you'll hit the same small, mildly annoying problem: the per-person amount, multiplied back out, doesn't quite match the total you started with. It's not a bug and it's not bad math — it's just what happens when you divide money, which only exists in whole cents, by a number that doesn't divide it evenly.

The arithmetic behind the gap. Take a $153.40 total split seven ways. Mathematically, that's $21.9142857... per person, an amount that goes on forever and can't actually be paid in real currency. Round it to the nearest cent — $21.91 — and multiply back by seven, and you get $153.37, three cents short of the real total. Round up to $21.92 instead, and seven people now overpay by four cents combined. There's no version of an equal split among seven people that lands exactly on the number to the penny; someone, somewhere, absorbs the difference.

Why it barely matters — and how to handle it anyway. A few cents spread across a group is rarely worth an argument, but it's worth deciding upfront rather than letting it become an awkward moment over payment apps. The simplest fix is to round every share up rather than down, so the group collectively covers the tab with a few cents to spare instead of coming up short. For recurring splits with the same group — a weekly dinner club, a standing coffee run — rotating who absorbs the odd cents each time keeps it fair over the long run without anyone tracking it closely.

The next time your per-person total looks slightly off when you multiply it back out, you haven't found an error. You've just found the one part of bill-splitting that no calculator, including this one, can make perfectly even.
