How to Split a Bill Fairly

Splitting a shared bill fairly means everyone pays their actual share — including tax and tip. The simplest approach is an equal split: divide the total (bill + tip) by the number of people. This works well when everyone ordered roughly the same amount and is the default this calculator shows.

For groups where orders varied significantly, custom splitting prevents resentment. The person who had a salad and water shouldn't pay the same as the person who had steak and a bottle of wine. The custom split mode lets you enter exact amounts per person, with a running balance showing how much remains to be allocated.

For tip splitting, you have two options: split the tip equally (each person pays the same tip amount regardless of their order), or apply the tip proportionally (each person's tip matches their share of the total food bill). Equal tip splitting is more common and simpler; proportional tip splitting is technically more accurate.

For recurring group expenses beyond restaurant bills — shared rent, utility bills, or trip costs — apps like Splitwise track who owes what across multiple expenses and people. For one-off restaurant splits, this calculator handles everything you need without an account.
