How to Calculate a Tip

Calculating a restaurant tip involves three numbers: the tip percentage, the tip dollar amount, and the total including tip. For groups, a fourth number — per-person share — is equally important. This calculator handles all four instantly.

Tip percentages in the US have crept upward over time. What was once 15% standard is now closer to 18–20% at sit-down restaurants, partly due to tip-screen prompts at more establishments starting at 18% or 20%. A 20% tip is easy to calculate mentally (10% of the bill × 2) and is now the de facto standard for good service.

For groups, splitting the bill equally is the simplest approach. Each person pays their share of the tip proportionally, so the tip percentage stays consistent across the group. If some guests ordered significantly more than others, the Bill Split Calculator offers a custom per-person amount feature for more precise splits.

The "round up" feature rounds each person's share up to the nearest dollar — useful for cash payments and a natural way to slightly increase the tip. On a $90 total split 4 ways, the exact share is $22.50; rounding up means each person pays $23, and the server receives the small overage as part of the tip.
